Recruitment Information

Join General Membership

Student Council holds two general membership application cycles: one beginning in mid-April until approximately early-May, and another in late-August until mid-September. The general membership application is always widely publicized on Student Council social media accounts and on the website. General members have the opportunity to serve on one of the many Cabinet, Administration, or Organizations committees, and are usually able to rank their preferences on the application. Generally speaking, general members have the following requirements:

  • Attending a set number of Student Council General Body meetings

  • Attending all regular committee meetings

  • Fulfilling a set number of training requirements with various approved modules or presentations from community organizations

  • Working on various committee initiatives or projects, at the direction of the Chair or Director

Students considering applying for general membership are encouraged to contact the Chair(s) or Director(s) of the committee(s) on which the would like to serve concerning the role’s requirements and skillset. Questions concerning general membership should be directed to the Vice President of Administration at studco-vpa@virginia.edu.

Join Leadership

Student Council leadership is comprised of appointed (i.e. unelected) Executive Board members, Chairs of the Cabinet, Support and Access Services, and Organizations branches, and Directors of the Administration branch. Any student is eligible to apply and interview for leadership positions during the annual application cycle in mid-March. Generally speaking, leadership positions have the following requirements:

  • Attending all Student Council General Body meetings and providing updates on respective projects/initiatives

  • Attending all regular committee and branch/leadership meetings

  • Overseeing a team of general members (your committee) and their work

Students considering applying for a leadership position are encouraged to contact the current office holder concerning the role’s requirements and skillset. Questions concerning the leadership application and interview process should be directed to the Vice President for Administration at studco-vpa@virginia.edu.

Run for Office

A portion of Student Council - the President, Vice Presidents, and all Representatives - are elected by the University student body. The President and Vice Presidents are elected by the entire student body, while Representatives are elected by the students of their respective schools. All of the University’s schools - undergraduate, graduate, and professional - are represented in Student Council. Elections take place each year in late-February or early-March, although preparing to run for office often begins in November or December.

Student Council does not oversee or moderate student elections. This task is delegated to the University Board of Elections. All questions concerning the election process - including eligibility, timeline, forms, ballot signatures, endorsement proceedings, and voting procedures - should be directed to the University Board of Elections.

Students considering running for office are encouraged to contact the current office holder.
