Sustainability

The Student Council Sustainability Committee seeks to build a community of students, staff, faculty, and alumni passionately concerned about sustainability and the world we inhabit, as well as to protect and improve the rights, opportunities, and quality of life for the community through environmental sustainability. We typically have about 15 committee members at a time. Applications will occur through the general Student Council application process in the fall or spring.

Zero Waste Program

The Zero Waste Program provides free compostable wares for student organizations hosting events involving food. Compostable plates, cups, utensils, etc. and composting services are available, free of charge to the organization. Please review the Zero Waste FAQs for specific questions or email studco-sustainability@virginia.edu to request help with zero wasting at least 2 weeks before your event.

Green leaders

The Sustainability Committee oversees the Green Leaders, an umbrella organization for all the sustainability-oriented organizations on Grounds. Green Leaders meets monthly to share information on projects and find opportunities for collaboration. If you are the leader of a organization on Grounds interested in getting involved with sustainability efforts and are not yet part of Green Leaders, please email studco-sustainability@virginia.edu for more information.

LEED Green Associates Exam Program

Launching in January 2020 in the Sustainability Committee’s LEED Green Associates Exam Program. With a grant from the Equity and Environment Fund, we plan to provide free studies materials and cover exam fees for students enrolled in the program. The program will take place at UVA during the J-term period, but not as an official J-Term course. Email studco-sustainability@virginia.edu for more information.

Other Recent Projects

  • Hosting events including sustainability clothing swaps, plastic bag take-backs, sustaina-bagels, sustaina-banquet, and skip-the-straw

Looking for Funding?

Are you looking to fund a sustainability related project? The StudCo Sustainability Committee does not have any funding to support student projects, but we can help you find some! The Equity and Environment Fund funds student led projects that are focused on the intersection between the environment and equity. The Green Initiative Funding Tomorrow Grant (GIFT) also provides funding for student projects on sustainability.
